Picture a scene, you're an international record company executive with a lifelong passion for music and electronics. At home you have a dedicated listening room with the very best hi-fi - tubes, horns, huge mono block amplifiers but more and more due to family and work you find yourself stuck with a laptop computer as your main listening source.

The answer for DiVA’s designer Kiho Kim was to build himself a small footprint, integrated amplifier that could do a very good job of playing back his increasing digital library of music. The main focus being digital music Kiho decided that there was no need to utilise common digital to analogue conversion and in fact by keeping the amplification within the digital domain he managed to completely eliminate negative feedback, a cause of distortion, phase displacement and deterioration of transient characteristics.

Digital Amplification

In the 1920’s and 30’s single ended triode amplifiers were built which had zero negative feedback. This lack of negative feedback made them more natural and musical with a downside of very limited power. The DiVA’s ability to achieve the same zero negative feedback by processing and performing amplification in a pure digital state makes it unique at its relatively low price point.

Thermal noise and distortion has always been an issue with analogue amplifiers but by performing the digital to analogue conversion after amplification the issues of nonlinearity and transistor noise are eliminated. The DDC (Digital to Digital Convertor) takes the incoming PCM signal (Pulse Code Modulation) and converts it to a PWM signal (Pulse Width Modulation) which can then be amplified whilst remaining in the digital domain.

Utilising a separate power supply has its obvious benefits and the DiVA is fed by a large adapted analogue transformer (instead of switching mode power supply commonly used due to size and cost) and supplies good quality current to the circuit. Oversized reservoir capacitors guarantee a rich and pleasant sound and the proprietary digital technology enables this compact amplifier to drive a large array of modern demanding loudspeakers.

Another huge bonus of digital amplification is the fact that EQ’s can be applied in a totally non destructive way before pre-amplification and suffer none of the issues of conventional bass and treble functionalities. The DiVA comes pre programmed with 24 presets allowing for easy room tuning.

Asynchronous Design and Signal Path

The DiVA incorporates four internal clocks to help eliminate jitter from source equipment. USB connection is detected by PC or Mac, no drivers required.

As the DiVA is built into a small chassis and without the need for internal power supplies the signal paths can be kept extremely small. The DDC, EQ, Preamplifier and Amplifier stages are all housed within the 231mm deep case.

Analogue Connection

The DiVA has been designed for use with digital equipment but we have still incorporated a connection for analogue equipment via RCA into an on board ADC (analogue to digital convertor). This conversion is necessary for digital amplification and wherever possible if your equipment has a choice of outputs we recommend using the digital option.

Chassis and Finish

The DiVA has an aluminum chassis and has been sand treated, brushed and anodised to achieve a quality finish.
